There are a few things we need in life. Some may say that air, water, fire and food were the main necessities, but we would even argue that next on that list should be a refrigerator. Refrigerators are a fairly new invention, only becoming an appliance for homes in 1913, but they have been a huge part of our society ever since. Keeping certain foods at a specific temperature allows us to enjoy them for longer and prevent us from getting ill from something that has rotted. Basically, refrigerators are a godsend, so it’s important to have a functioning one at home. If you start to see these signs coming from your fridge, it may be time to buy a new one.
1. Condensation everywhere
A little condensation is alright, but if it looks like your fridge is sweating profusely, then there is a problem. This could be something as simple as fixing the seal, which you may be able to do on your own. Check for cracks, holes, or mildew along the rubber lining to see if there is an opening anywhere that may be causing the condensation. Unfortunately, if this continues for too long without getting fixed, your food could start to spoil.
2. Hot Motor
Consistent heat in the back of the fridge is never a good sign. The coils in the back of the fridge are insulated which should prevent them from causing warmth in the back of the fridge, but if you feel a lot of heat in that area, there could be something wrong with them. Your options are to either call a repair man or consider investing in a brand new Maytag refrigerator, free of issues. The latter is tempting.
3. Food is going bad
You may not think that anything is wrong, but next thing you know, your refrigerator is producing spoiled food. If this is the case, your refrigerator is probably working extra hard to get cold, but failing. It may explain why your bill just shot through the roof and now you’ll need to replace any groceries that went bad. At this point, you’re just wasting money and could probably save it for a new and working fridge.
4. Freezer is too cold
The freezer part of the refrigerator should never be “too cold”. Of course, you want the items in there to freeze, but you shouldn’t have to break ice away trying to get to that food. Newer units have an automatic defrosting feature, but if yours is too old, it may be time for a look at Maytag appliances soon.
Whatever the problem is, a refrigerator is an important part of the home. While a repairman may seem like the answer at the moment, scoping out your options for a new fridge may save you more in the long run.
